Say hello to our new “1 Tree for 1 Ton” intiative

Since its founding in 1960, Petrofer has been selling pine chemical products made from renewable raw materials. The majority of our products are made from crude gum harvested from living trees. Even though no trees are felled for our natural resin products, we would like to do something to ensure that more new trees are planted.

Therefore, for every ton of natural resin products (Pinus and Resina line) sold, we will plant a new tree.

Why plant trees?

Trees are all-rounders that protect against flooding and ground erosion, purify our drinking water, contribute to biodiversity, or create jobs for the surrounding population. The list of benefits is endless. And planting trees is probably one of the easiest ways to combat climate change. In many places around the world, nature is being pushed back and has to manage with less and less space. It is therefore important to create spaces in which nature can fully develop on its own again. Since 2009, Petrofer has been involved in the reforestation for crude gum harvesting. It was therefore natural to develop this idea further.

Why not compensate the specific emissions?

We hope that our trees will have many, many years to grow and thus make a truly sustainable contribution. Besides, the model “1 tree for 1 ton” is very easy to visualize.

If you would like to have a numerical example:
To transport a container with a net weight of 20 tons from China to Europe, about 1’400 kg CO2e (well-to-wheel) are emitted. Depending on the species, a tree can absorb about 300 kg CO2e in its lifetime. For the container shipped, Petrofer will plant 20 trees, which is equivalent to offsetting 6,000 kg CO2e.

How does planting the trees work?

We support the #teamtrees fundraising campaign, which was launched in 2019 by YouTubers MrBeast and Mark Robber. The original fundraising goal was to plant 20 million trees by 2020. To date, the campaign has been able to plant over 24 million trees. All donations go directly to the Arbor Day Foundation, which is responsible for the actual planting of the trees.

What’s next?

Petrofer doesn’t just sell products made from renewable resources. However, we are also trying to make a meaningful and sustainable contribution in this area as well. We are currently working on an innovative solution for selling our hydrocarbon resins and our polymer additives. Stay tuned 😉
